Floriana railway tunnel opened for visitors for the first time in years

The old railway tunnel beneath Floriana is open for visitors today, the first time in a generation.

The activity is part of a day of events being held by Floriana Council, highlighting Floriana's gardens and important buildings.

The tunnel runs from beneath City Gate in Valletta right up to Portes des-Bombes. It was used until the Malta Railway closed down in March 1931.

During the war, part of it was used as a communications hub while another section was used as a shelter and furnished with rows of bunk-beds for those seeking protection from aerial bombing.

Tours are being held from near the former Methodist Church in Floriana.
