An operating system like Linux or Windows support multi-tasking, process execution and can server hundreds of simultaneous visitors on your site. Linux is a free and open source operating system used by about half of the websites. CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu are flavors of Linux. Microsoft's Windows is not a free OS and it has a small market share. CentOS is the most popular flavor of Linux.
