How to protect your dogs from snake bites and what to do if they're bit
Sunny spring and summer days in Texas make perfect opportunities to leash up your dog and go for a walk. They sometimes also make perfect opportunities to encounter venomous snakes.

Talking dogs: Consistent training needed to stop leash pulling
Q: I have taught my dog Brutus to walk on a leash without pulling, which he does perfectly, but only on the way home from the park where he gets to run every day. On the way to the park, he pulls so hard that he retches, and I can hardly control him. I've put a harness on him so he doesn't choke himself, but it hasn't helped. Brent

Crate training a puppy is efficient, not cruel
Q: We are getting a yellow Lab puppy from a breeder who has very good references. We have been on her waiting list for a year. This is the first dog I have had since I was a child, and we want to do everything correctly. The breeder forcefully insists that we keep the puppy in a crate to house-train it. She told us she will not sell us the puppy unless we agree to it. When I was a kid, we never kept a puppy in a crate and neither did anybody else on the block, and all our dogs eventually became housebroken. I do not like the idea of keeping our new family member in a cage, yet it seems to be the thing to do these days. What are your thoughts?

Extraction the only solution to kitty’s cavities
Q: Our veterinarian told us our cat has cavities on three of her teeth, and that they must be pulled. This makes no sense: Clarabelle eats only cat food, not sweets, and does not seem to be in any pain. Please advise.
