The Ramsey County Historical Society is the officially-recognized historical agency of Ramsey County. The Society began in 1949 when a group of citizens moved to acquire and preserve the Heman and Jane Gibbs farm in suburban Falcon Heights. Following five years of restoration work, the Gibbs Museum opened its gates in 1954. In 1974, the farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Society’s two primary programs are the Gibbs Museum of Pioneer and Dakotah Life and a quarterly magazine, Ramsey County History, which won its second national award from the American Association for State and Local History. In addition, the Society offers lectures, exhibits and research facilities at Landmark Center in downtown St. Paul. The Society is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 membership driven, donor supported organization that depends on gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations for its annual support.

The Ramsey County Historical Society library, located in the Society’s main office in Landmark Center, contains a unique hard-copy of a survey of 5,000 historic sites in Ramsey County, as well as St. Paul city directories going back to 1856, Sanborn plat maps and an extensive collection of 19th and 20th century photographs. The Society’s archives contain the records of the St. Paul Winter Carnival and the House of Hope Presbyterian Church, among other resources.
