A man who once managed the Waterbury budget and a senatorial campaign for the former mayor of Waterbury, Philip Giordano, said in federal court yesterday that he had accepted bribes on his behalf. The man, Thomas M. Ariola Jr., 39, of Watertown, pleaded guilty to bribery, federal income tax fraud and violating campaign laws for accepting donations for Mr. Giordano in exchange for continuing a $100,000 street-sweeping contract, according to court documents. He faces a maximum sentence of 16 years. He was released on bond. Mr. Giordano is serving a 37-year sentence for sexual assault. Stacey Stowe (NYT)
