Rolfe S. Saunders papers, 1766-1889

Collection contains nine letters, three photographs, and an autograph album belonging to Rolfe Saunders, editor of the Memphis Daily Eagle and other newspapers in Tennessee. The letters collected by Saunders are from Andrew Jackson, General Joseph Johnston, James K. Polk, Edward Everett, John P. Kennedy, and Millard Fillmore. Photographs include an ambrotype and a card photograph of Rolfe Saunders and and ambrotype of his wife, Martha Billing Saunders. The autograph album contains signatures from Thomas Jefferson, from a fragment of a letter he wrote less than two months before he died, and those of a number of U.S. presidents, congressmen, and literary and military figures including: George Washington, John Adams, Alexander Hamilton, Daniel Webster, John Hancock, James Madison, Henry Clay, Millard Fillmore, Antonio López de Santa Anna, John C. Calhoun, Martin Van Buren, Horace Greeley, John Tyler, Washington Irving and many others
