Hundreds of different plant species can be found in the park including plants that grow under water such as seagrasses. Some of the most interesting plants are the mangroves and one of the longest continuous stretches of mangroves left on Florida's East coast is protected at Biscayne.

Some of the last populations in the world of rare and endangered species are protected here too, such as the Florida semaphore cactus and buccaneer palm, considered to be the rarest palm native to Florida.
