In advance of the Cannes Film Festival’s announcement of the winner of the Palme d’Or and its other awards, the Queer Palm has been awarded to Skoonheid, which played in the Un Certain Regard sidebar.
Directed by South African director Oliver Hermanus, the films tells the story of a married man who is forced to deal with his attraction to other men.
The Queer Palm, which launched last year, is an unofficial award, not connected to the festival itself, that is awarded to film that contributes to lesbian, gay, bi or transgender issues.
The award was selected by a jury that consisted of Elisabeth Quin, Gérard Lefort, Thomas Albetshauser, Fred Arends, Esther Cuénot and Roberto Schinardi.
