Obama’s ‘One Thing’

EXETER, N.H. — For the second day in a row, the Obama campaign gathered a small group of voters on Thursday to meet with the presidential candidate in an “informal” setting — informal that is if these local residents didn’t mind the bright television lights and a couple dozen reporters listening to their every word.

The day’s theme: the independent voter.

And in that spirit, one member of the group of six New Hampshire independents who met with Senator Obama at the Loaf and Ladle restaurant here posed a question that seemed to stump him for a moment.

“If you could make one change in the world, enact one piece of legislation — one thing, that’s all you’re going to get through in your presidency — what would it be?” asked Peter Colby of Rye, N.H.

After thinking it over for a few seconds, Mr. Obama offered this response:

“I would enact a bold energy policy because I think that we could save so much money, engineer such a resurgence in our economy and solve climate change all at one time. And it would improve our national security posture. So you get a three-fer. It helps our environment, our economy and our national security and it would free up resources over time to deal with what I think is the most important domestic issue which is health care, and I think it would help us strategically on the international stage.”

Foregoing the war in Iraq and other hot-button issues, Mr. Obama went with what seemed like a more technocratic answer. Nevertheless, Mr. Colby said he was pleased by Mr. Obama’s choice.

“We went to the moon in ten years,” he said. “We should be able to do it.”

Mr. Obama agreed, “We should be able to do it.”

Comments are no longer being accepted.

The same old politics just won’t do. It’s time to turn the page. Obama ’08

Al Gore, endorse him…NOW! Before it’s too late!!!

I never cease to be amazed by Senator Barack Obama’a brillance. I saw it in 2004 and I see it now. It is truly thrilling to see him evolve and grow through this grueling process known as campaigning. We desperatley need this fine, inteligent man to be our leader. For the first time in decades, I too, feel HOPE! Thank you Senator for the favor of your candidacy.

What is a bold energy policy compared to an energy policy. Is this guy a lawyer? Yes,talk, talk with so specifics and a lot of spin.Pathetic.

That is a long-winded answer for a simple question. The guy hasn’t thought through why he wants to be president! He criticizes his opponents for being long-winded!

“Foregoing the Iraq and other hot-button issues” – that’s just the point isn’t it? The guy who talks about “hope” and other “soft issues” – the one they accuse of being a lightweight – thinks for a second and comes up with an answer that is clearly an excellent one. As he concisely points out, it is one piece of legislation that could – even to the most concrete thinker – touch a multitude of issues – including Iraq (at least from a fighting terrorism point of view). It’s brilliant really. I mean, what’s not to like?

…Doug

Obama is such a strategic thinker, he will make a great commander in chief.

I hope Tom Friedman notices this. Energy independence, the environment and national security have broad appeal, a great example of an issue where you can bring people together to get a lasting change accomplished.

The exact answer I would have wanted to hear.

This is why so many people like Obama – he has thoughtful intellect – and not calculated political moves.

You’d have to be crazy to vote Republicans in right now.

Obama is all show. He did not even have a top priority that he REALLY would like to see implemented. He wants to be the “Rock Star.” I could never take this guy seriously.

Obama insists he is so anti-war. He skips it because he is afraid of how many votes he will lose. This guy has no convictions at all. He is an ambitious guy who wants to be president, and that is his only agenda. He says he was so anti-war, but admits he would not know how he would have voted. He can neverprove how he would have voted because he was not in Congress at the time the vote was cast. The fact that he side-stepped Iraq and other controversial issues shows how gutless he is. Obama is as happy as a lark as long as he is the STAR ENTERTAINER. I want someone serious in the presidency, and Obama does not fit that bill. He has no experience, and he does not even know what his top priority would be. This guy is not fit to be president. Obama is a COWARD.

Hillary Clinton is the knows her priorites. I will definitely vote for her in the primary.

Anyone but Obama. This is no time for a novice. I also have severe reservations about him due to his past use of pot, cocaine and alcohol abuse. He also cannot give up cigarrettes. Since when did smoking become a healthy choice?

Obama is a media invention and that is all.

An articulate thinker, who puts Americans health and security first, and is not beholding to corporate interests. Excellent. Obama has my vote.

The One issue is such that it truly serves as a PANACEA for all other issues:

Economy: New job growth and technology to export to other countries.

Climate Change: Obvious.

National Security: Energy independence from petrol dictators and getting our butts out of the Middle East.

Humanitarian: Providing new technologies to developing third world countries for self-sufficient growth.

Health care: Decreasing rates of Asthma and Cancer as we decrease the amount of carcinogens we breath.

Man…I just like this Obama guy! I think he is the real deal of all the field for all parties. I have this connection that I had never had with any politician. Hope he make it all the way!

Later, when Mrs. Mature New York, Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton was asked the same question, she responded with:

“I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children. And I have been fighting for 35 years, like such as, to bring positive change agents to the Iraq and everywhere, such as. Thank you.”

Hey, David #11, go read Obama’s Oct.26, 2002 speech…speaking out like that at a time like that is NOT cowardly. For such a “novice”, as you call him, he sure was a lot more on the money than Hillary was

The problem is, he says he’d enact a “bold energy policy” but we are given no idea of what that policy would be.

The exact answer I would have wanted to hear.

Jeff, Barack was calucalated. He made sure to not take on any difficult issues that might cost him. He has no reason to be president other than he wants to be president. Obama is for Obama and only Obama.

You’d have to be crazy to vote Republicans in right now.

If Obama somehow became the nominee, it would be the sane thing to do. I have every intention of voting for the Republicans if Obama should get the Democratic nomination. Bush’s tax cuts will remain in place, and that is one good thing from this otherwise failed adminstration.

David – “Obama insists he is so anti-war. He skips it because he is afraid of how many votes he will lose.”

He didn’t “skip” the vote on the Kyl-Lieberman Amendment. The day before the vote, Harry Reid said that it wouldn’t be held that night, so Obama flew to New Hampshire to prepare for a debate the next day. Then at noon, Reid announced that there would be a vote in 30-40 minutes. It was physically impossible for Obama to have made it back in time to vote.

If you’re so concerned about high school drug use, can you name the last president who didn’t experiment when younger?

Too bad he didn’t explain why he voted “present” an astounding 130 times in the Illinois State Senate on some of the state’s toughest issues.

Great answer by Obama. Somebody needs to ban Hillary supporters from posting on this site already, because their answers are so completely insane. No matter what Obama does, they spit out the same exact talking points. They’re almost as robotic as she is!

Mr. Falcone,

Is taking a few seconds to give a cogent, thoughtful, authentic and intelligent answer, being STUMPED, your word??? It is not wonderful that Barack Obama actually thinks before opening his mouth? Doesn’t sound like an automaton like HRC?

Anyway, Obama is not a one issue candidate and such questions do not dignify the office of the president. So, in that sense, yes, baffling.

That was a great answer by Obama. BUT, he didn’t offer the specifics of what “enacting a bold energy policy” means. With energy policy, as with so many other policies, the devil is in the details. I am not going to vote for Obama because he doesn’t have the experience it takes to formulate or enact the bold policies he speaks of. Still, it is good to see that a prominent politician is putting the right issues at the forefront of discussions. We anonymous voters should thank him, at least, for serving that purpose.

Lead, follow or get out of the way! Hillary, please step aside.

Poor David #11, are you the next Clinton staffer to get fired?
