GREENSBORO, N.C. — Charlotte Hornets executives have officially chosen Greensboro to be the home of their new NBA Development League Team.

The team nickname has not been announced yet, but Hornets executives say the team will start playing in the fall of 2016.

The D-League team will play its 24 home games at the Greensboro Coliseum’s Pavilion. The facility will be renovated to a 2,500 seat fieldhouse. The NBA D-League offices will be located next door at the Greensboro Convention and Visitor’s Bureau building.

Coliseum officials say Pavilion improvements will be funded through hotel/motel occupancy tax revenues.

During a press conference Tuesday, Charlotte Hornets President and Chief Operating Officer Fred Whitfield said they also factored in Greensboro’s proximity to Charlotte and the city’s love of basketball when they made their decision.

“As much as anything, we wanted a place where the fans have a passion for the game of basketball and would support our team. Greensboro is a city with an outstanding, long, rich basketball tradition,” said Whitfield.

Tickets will go on sale in January.
